Digging for China

Yes Honey, The Good Plates

china-plateAs a busy Virtual Assistant, wife and mom,  my usually well organized household occasionally goes to hell in a handbasket.    Yesterday was one of those days.

When it came time for dinner, I realized among other things, that the dishwasher had not been turned on.  So rather than use paper plates, I asked my 17 year old son to get the “good” dishes from the dining room.  He looked at me in utter astonishment and said: “But those are only for when we have company”!  I realized in that moment the subtle message I had been feeding my children for many years -  that the special plates were only for special times.  With two busy teenagers, what could be more special than the time I get to spend with them and my husband on the rare occasion that we now get together over dinner to share the day’s events and commune as a family?  It has forever changed the way I think about that dinnerware.

I have another small set of  Wedgewood China that he has never seen. It’s been buried in the hutch for years because I was afraid to use it in case pieces got broken and couldn’t be replaced.  Today I am going to dig that China out and we are going to use it even if we have mac and cheese for dinner!

As a VA, I take on the administrative and marketing admin details of my client’s businesses so that they in turn, can devote more quality time with their clients, prospects, friends and family.  Nothing is more precious to me than my family.  Now, the quality time that I am going to spend with my family at dinner hour is going to be in style!

Life can change in a moment.  When is the last time you used your good china on a Thursday?
